Operational Use

An ocean-going infantry carrier designed for direct unloading on the beach. Although living space, galley, and toilet are provided for accomodation of troopes, the space is limited to a practical operational time of 48 hours.

Description

Early models, illustrated by the drawing, are undergoing the changes shown by the photos; heightened conning tower, mainmast moved forward.

Capacity

6 officers, 182 enlisted men, or 75 tons cargo.

Endurance

4,000 miles @ 12 knots; beaching draft allows for 500 miles @ 15 knots, or 1,500 miles @ 12 knots.

Speed

16 kts. max. (loaded) @ 650 r. p. m.

Length, 158' 5 1/2" o. a. Beam, 23' 3"

Displacement

Light, 216 tons. Draft 3' 1 1/2" mean.
Landing, 234 tons. 2' 8" for'd, 4' 10" aft.
Loaded, 380 tons. 5' 4" for'd, 5' 11" aft.
Tons per inch imersion, 6.5 at landing draft, 7.0 at ocean draft.

Armament

Four 20 mm. (British also carry two .303 Lewis guns).

2" plastic splinter protection for guns, conning tower, and pilothouse sides.

2 sets of G. M. Diesels; max. B.H.P. 1,600; twin variable-pitch screws.

Fuel

130 tons fuel oil, 200 gallons lube.
